Avery’s Pond – Newcastle, California

Avery’s Pond is approximately 2.5-miles of lovely trail to and around the pond. It is a part of the Folsom State Recreation Area and connects with much larger trails. The trail loop is a mild hike with a couple of slightly steep terrains, but for the most part, this is an easy and fully trailed hike that allows for some good exercise.

Parking and fees

The trail is open year-round and can be accessed at the Rattlesnake Bar Boat Launch. Parking is $12 and there is a self-register box to place your cash if an attendant is not at the entrance. We arrived on a Sunday Fall morning, about 9 am, it was not congested and plenty of parking. There is also a restroom in the main lot, so be sure to utilize it before your adventure.

What I pack

Bottled water, thin layers, and good shoes (I love a good pair of running shoes, Under Armour HOVR Sonic tend to be my go-to for workouts and easy to moderate trail hikes) I brought my lightweight pre-packed backpack. I always have snack bars, hand wipes, a small tube of sunblock, an emergency whistle, mini flash light, and a pocket knife, packed and ready to go. For help creating your hikers go-pack visit HERE. (And, if you enjoy fishing bring your gear because you can fish here too!)

Avery’s Pond has a nicely paved, clear, and accessible trail once you find the trailhead. It meanders along trees, across wooden bridges, and past streams. It was alive with vibrant plants, sounds of birds, water dancing, and the footsteps of other hikers.

As you head toward the pond you can see lovely views of an area of Folsom Lake. There is a trail that leads to the lake as well and we decided to walk down that pathway too. It was absolutely beautiful with morning fog dancing around the little island peaks.

To picnic or not to picnic?

There are picnic benches strewed about the trail so packing in a lovely lunch is doable, but if you are like me and love to visit eateries when you go to a new destination, then you may want to pop in and enjoy Flower Farm Cafe! It is approximately 5 miles from Avery’s. The food was fresh and yummy, the grounds to walk are lovely, and they offer wine tasting, and have a gift shop too. It was a lovely lunch to wrap up another Perfectly Practical Hiking day ♥

This day’s hiking crew included my sister and a couple of close family friends. I love hiking in small groups. Getting people out and seeing their enjoyment makes my adventurous heart smile ♥
